Transitional Kindergarten
Joyful Learning
Kids’ bodies, brains, creativity, friendships, and resilience thrive on play.
A steppingstone between preschool and kindergarten, transitional kindergarten is often referred to as the first year of a two-year kindergarten experience. STEAM Academy partners with homeschool families and utilizes a developmentally appropriate, play-based curriculum that will help children thrive in kindergarten. In 2024–25, children are eligible to attend STEAM Academy’s Transitional Kindergarten program when they turn 5 between Sept. 2 and June 2.
The TK program thrives to build a classroom community where learners feel welcomed and included. TK is a half day or full day program that meets on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Enrichment classes are also offered on Mondays and Wednesdays.
Dramatic Play stimulates curiosity, imagination, and creativity
Dramatic play is a form of symbolic play where children act out make-believe scenarios and stories, taking on different characters and imitating actions and speech. Here are some examples of dramatic play:
- Role-playing: Children can pretend to be a doctor or parent to a doll, or participate in a school play.
- Dressing up: Children can put on clothes or costumes, which can help them learn about different careers, cultural customs, and more.
- Fixing things: Children can diagnose and fix problems like a broken TV or faucet.
- Exploring: Children can discover new things in their room or backyard.
- Singing: Children can create a concert for their classmates or family, designing costumes and props, and choosing songs to sing.
- Pretend play in different settings: Children can use their math and literacy skills in store settings like a grocery store, florist, or bakery. For example, they can imitate their parents by writing a shopping list or making a recipe.
